The Super Blazer was born out of the $1000 race. This race consisted of teams with a $1000 budget to buy a car, make any improvements, and race it through the desert. A television station was unloading some old SUVs, and it was a match made in heaven.
One cold March afternoon Will Dotter and Tony Brummer went to the auto parts store to discover that night was the O’Reily’s Outlaw National Championship Hot Rod Motorsports Series. One call to Eric “Hillbilly” Cunningham and lives were changed forever. At the monster truck rally one look at the tough truck competition and the Super Blazer was born. The only requirements were that you had the battery strapped down, a seatbelt attached to the vehicle in some way, and most importantly, you had to be there by 4. Tony and Hillbilly went straight to the lab to begin modifications. They worked through the night and by the next afternoon we were ready to roll.
The Super Blazer got to the competition by 4, as well as meeting the other race requirements. When it was race time she soared through the air like an eagle over the first jump and crashed harder than Robert Downey Jr. after a four-day bender on the second. When the SuperBlazer was entered the competition, the brakes didn’t really work. By the end of the race, the engine wouldn’t hold oil either. The Super Blazer just was too far gone for fixin’, so the best thing to do is to send her out with a bang, literally. We are going to blow her up and make a documentary about us doing it.
The best way to do this seemed be to auction the car off on Ebay and make the winner a personalized video of the Super Blazer blowing up. This idea failed miserably. A friend of ours got drunk and used someone else’s Ebay account to bid on the blazer, and she won the auction for $4.25. Then she didn’t pay.
We realized this gives us a chance to hold the webathon. This worked out better for everyone. Now everyone can be a part of the process, and the explosion. Instead of one person getting one video, everyone can get a video and relive their Super Blazer memories and dreams over and over again. The Super Blazer has lived a happy life full of adventure, but all good things come to an end. Her time has come. She has lost her way. Help us send her home.
The Super Blazer ended up getting set on fire accidentally (kind of), and has been put to rest, but we shot some really cool videos over the course if its life. Check them out. I hope you get a laugh or 2.
